Uttarakhand

The state Congress government here is facing the wrath of the people due to their lack of assistance in the aftermath of the floods that happened in June 2013. Along with the anti-incumbency wave at the centre, it should most likely be a clean sweep for BJP. But one seat Nainital could pose the challenge, where sitting MP, KC Baba will be eyeing a hat-trick, but is facing a tough opponent in BJP's Bhagat Singh Koshyari, a former CM. Though KC Baba won by a huge margin in 2009, it is expected to be a closer fight this time. Other parties like BSP, SP, AAP are also expected to target some vote banks and split Congress votes. Koshyari has been the CM of the state once, and if his strong campaigning proves successful, it could very well be a clean sweep.

Briefs on the other constituencies -

  • Almora - Pradeep Tamta won in 2009 and is relying on his clean image and the support of CM Harish Rawat to win again, but the anti-incumbency factor should be strong this time and BJP's Ajay Tamta who lost by a close margin in 2009 should make it
  • Haridwar- Haridwar is a strategic and most watched constituency in the state as Renuka Rawat, the CM's wife is contesting against BJP's former CM Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. Though Harish Rawat won the LS seat in 2009 by a landslide margin, the anti-incumbency factor and the devastation caused due to floods is expected to go in the favor of Nishank.
  • Garhwal - Congress's sitting MP from here, Satpal Maharaj has switched to BJP, giving them a major boost. BJP's candidate Major General B.C.Khanduru is expected to gain the votes of many ex-servicemen in this constituency
  • Tehri Garhwal - Should be a very easy win here for Maharani Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah who had already beaten Saket Bahuguna in the 2009 elections by a comfortable margin. This year the Modi factor and anti-incumbency against Congress at both state and national level will make the task a lot simpler for Mala, who has great respect in this constituency

Chhattisgarh

Traditionally, a BJP bastion, this year is going to be no different, with the main Congress contenders being Ajit Jogi, Phoolodevi Netam and Charan Das Mahant.

Some interesting constituencies to watch out for -
  • Kanker - This constituency could be the closest fight as Congress won 6 out of 8 segments in the assembly elections last year. Their candidate Phoolodevi Netam escaped the Maoist ambush of the Congress motorcade in the Darbha valley of Bastar with bullet injuries in her foot. Tribal votes could go more in favor of her than BJP candidate Usendi who was chosen over sitting MP Sohan Potai who was found to be associated with  Maoist sympathizers
  • Mahasamund - Ajit Jogi, Congress's face in Chhatisgarh is on a tricky pitch. BJP has fielded sitting MP Chandu Lal Sahu(there are 10 independent namesakes in the fray as well). Jogi's campaign has been spearheaded by his daughter-in-law Richa, but the anti-incumbency factor is going to be difficult to overcome even for a politician of the stature of Ajit Jogi
  • Korba - Sitting MP and Farmer-turned politician Charan Das Mahant is a much more respected figure locally in this stronghold of Ajit Jogi and is expected to beat the anti-incumbency factor and beat BJP's 74-year old Banshilal Mahato. In 2009, Charan Das had beaten Vajpayee's nephew Karuna Shukla by a margin of 40000 votes
  • Rajnandgaon - Abhishek Singh, contesting his first election is the son of CM Raman Singh and should win this seat comfortably

Rajasthan

Having swept the Assembly elections in 2013 convincingly, BJP is the clear leader in this state and Vasundhara Raje has expressed confidence that BJP should be able to win all 25 seats. This will be difficult to achieve, especially in the light of Jaswant Singh being sidelined by the party and him contesting as an independent from Barmer. There are a few Congress Union Ministers too who will be a tough challenge.

The interesting contests in this state -
  • Barmer - After being denied a ticket by BJP, Jaswant Singh who left Darjeeling is contesting as an Independent in his home town Barmer. State CM Vasundhara Raje has made every move possible to stop him from eating into BJP's Rajput votes. It should be a close contest, but Jaswant should prevail
  • Ajmer - Sachin Pilot, the 36-year old sitting MP from Ajmer and a Union Minister, is seeking a second term for his development agenda. But RSS-backed BJP candidate Sanwarlal Jat is banking on the popularity of his party's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi and their performance in the assembly elections in Ajmer where they won 8 out of 8 seats in Ajmer. One of the promising faces of Congress may have to lose out due to the anti-incumbency factor.
  • Dausa -  BJP has fielded former DGP Harish Chandra Meena, while fighting against him is his own brother and Congress nominee Namo Narain Meena. There's another Meena in the fray too. Kirori Lal Meena of the National People's Party is a popular face here and could be a potential winner too. This has historically been Congress's stronghold from 1991 to 2004 when Rajesh Pilot and Sachin Pilot held the constituency.
  • Jaipur Rural - Even though a first timer, sportsman-turned-politician Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has gained ground fast in this constituency where he faces Congress's veteran former union minister C P Joshi, who has shifted from his earlier constituency Bhilwara to Jaipur rural this time
  • Jhunjhunu - A triangular contest is on the cards here as BJP's only woman candidate from the state, Santosh Ahlawat faces Congress's Rajbala Ola and Independent Rajkumar Sharma. BJP faces the ire of the Rajputs due to their snubbing of Jaswant Singh. Olas have held this seat for the last 5 terms though the margins have not always been large.
  • Sikar - This is the only seat I am predicting as a win for Congress. Since BJP rebel Subhash Maharia is contesting here with the support of Jaswant Singh, BJP votes are expected to split, giving Congress's Pratab Singh Jat an edge.
  • Tonk-Sawai Madho - Mohammed Azharuddin who left his Moradabad seat and is contesting for Congress here, but doesn't stand much of a chance as he is considered an outsider and Meenas are the dominant community here, and their vote will hold sway over Muslim votes
Congress Congress will be a close contender in Bhilwara, where the Youth Congress president, Ashok Chandna is contesting and in Nagaur, where Dr. Jyoti Mirdha, a Congress sitting MP who is well respected in her constituency is contesting

West Bengal

Will Didi succeed in her quest to be a king maker in the government formation? Her target of 30+ seats was projected by many opinion polls to be very feasible. She is making every effort in the state to ensure the Left bastions are smothered, and the few BJP and Congress seats are snatched back.  The state intelligence branch of West Bengal Police has predicted only 18-22 seats for the Trinamool while BJP could win 4. This could be called an underestimation by many, but they were accurate in the 2011 assembly when they predicted 180-185 seats for TMC and they ended up winning 184.

The strongest undercurrent in the state is the use of violence by Trinamool party workers to keep the Left supporters away from the booths. Another allegation is the booth rigging across many rural areas not monitored by the CRPF. Whether such dirty tactics along with her image in the state will ensure an even stronger vote share in favor of Trinamool remains to be seen. Both Trinamool and BJP have fielded many stars to add more flavor to the polls this year. Whether these stars succeed is another highlight of the elections in WB.

Some of the interesting contests in the state will be in the following constituencies-

  • Darjeeling - One of the most interesting contests in the state as BJP's S.S. Ahluwalia is taking on Indian soccer star Bhaichung Bhutia fielded by Trinamool in a strategic move to wrest this seat from BJP which won this seat comfortably in 2009 fielding Jaswant Singh. The BJP candidate is supported by Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) who are against Bhutia and Trinamool. The demand for Gorkhaland though hasn't been backed strongly by the BJP in their manifesto and campaigns, which could cause a setback.
  • Bankura - Basudeb Acharya has held this seat since 1980 and should ideally not lose to Moon Moon Sen of Trinamool Congress for whom her daughters Riya and Raima have campaigned enthusiastically to add the glamor quotient. But Moon Moon has been gaining a lot of ground and could cause a major upset here
  • Serampore - One of the most watched constituencies of the state, the craze for Bappi da is expected to help BJP wrest this seat from Trinamool's Kalyan Banerjee, but it will not be easy
  • Ghatal - Dev, a young and popular Bengali film star is contesting on a Trinamool ticket to wrest this seat from the Left. Even the CPM leaders have conceded defeat as sitting MP, CPI's veteran leader Gurudas Dasgupta retired from politics before the elections. CPI's Santosh Rana is seen as no match to Dev
  • Asansol - Always a CPM stronghold this time it is witnessing a fierce battle from BJP's singer-turned politician Babul Supriyo who has gained a lot of ground. But TMC is desperate to ensure BJP doesn't gain much vote share
  • Bongaon - The Matua caste will play the decisive role here. Both Trinamool and BJP have fielded candidates who have a strong base in that community and are expected to be the main contestants here. BJP's K.D.Biswas is the secretary of the Matua Mahasangh and is considered quite influential. Since Bongaon is also close to the Bangladesh border, Modi's speech about treating infiltration more strictly is also expected to play a role
  • Barasat - Interesting contest here as magician P.C.Sorcar junior is fielded by BJP to take on the might of Trinamool's sitting MP Dr. Kakali Ghoshdostidar. Whether he will do some magic remains to be seen. Dr. Mortoza Hossain from AIFB is the other candidate in the fray
  • Jangipur - Abhijit Mukherjee, son of Pranab Mukherjee is the sitting MP here and is expected to face a tough challenge from strong muslim leaders fielded by other parties. Though he is confident of winning, Trinamool's Nurul Islam and CPM's Muzzafar Hossain are potential threats. Nurul had won in 2009 from Basirhat and is contesting from here in a strategic move by Mamata
  • Howrah - It should be a comfortable win for ex-football captain Prasun Banerjee from Trinamool, who won here in a 2013 bypoll defeating Sridip Bhattacharya. But the police intelligence report has predicted a loss for him.
  • Dum Dum - It is a triangular contest here between three strong candidates. Sitting MP Saugata Roy of Trinamool will find it tough to retain this seat against Tapan Sikdar of BJP, who has won here twice in the 90s and CPM's Asim Dasgupta who was the state's finance minister in its 20-year rule
  • Jadavpur - It is from this constituency that a young Mamata Banerjee defeated Somnath Chaterjee in 1984. Though this constituency has sprung surprises often, it seems to be advantage AITC here for a second term as the rural population is in support of Mamata. Also of note is that Trinamool candidate Sugata Bose is a Harvard history professor and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's grandnephew
  • Joynagar - It is unclear who has the edge here, as sitting MP Tarun Mandal who won as an Independent in 2009 is contesting on a SUCI ticket this year, while Subhas Naskar will look to wrest back this seat for RSP which had held this seat from 1980 to 2004. Trinamool has been accused of rigging and violence in this constituency as well, and this could also very well affect the outcome
  • Kolkata Uttar - It is expected to be a close contest here between 4 candidates - Trinamool sitting MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Congress veteran Somen Mitra BJP's state president Rahul Sinha and CPM's KMC Opposition leader Rupa Bagchi. But Trinamool has the edge as it controls all seven assembly segments and 38 of the 60 KMC wards
  • Purulia - Will be a triangular contest between AIFB's sitting MP Narahari Mahato, Trinamool's Mriganka Mahato and Congress's Nepal Mahata. Congress's candidate is seen as a good challenger because of his local support and his role in bringing steel giant Jindal to this constituency. It will be tough for him to battle Congress's anti-incumbency

Bihar

It is Modi vs Nitish vs Laloo in this constituency. Having been upset in 2009, Lalu Prasad Yadav has campaigned aggressively to ensure a better performance for RJD, but having allied with the Congress, he will face a tough task battling the anti-incumbency factor to perform well. JD(U) on the other hand is facing anti-incumbency in the state and is expected to lose a great portion of their vote share. It is the BJP-LJP alliance which stands to gain in this state with anywhere between 18-24 votes or even more.

Some interesting constituencies -
  • Pataliputra - Lalu has launched his daughter into politics from this constituency and has left no stone unturned to ensure she wins, but she faces a stiff challenge from sitting JD(U) MP Ranjan Prasad Yadav, the giant-killer who beat Lalu in 2009, and RJD turncoat Ramkripal Yadav, who switched from RJD to BJP recently
  • Madhepura - In this constituency from which Lalu won in 1998 and 2004, sitting MP Sharad Yadav will have a tough contest against Pappu Yadav of RJD. Will be a very close fight.
  • Banka - Putul Kumari won as an independent in the bypolls in 2010, and is now contesting as the BJP candidate and should win comfortably. She is a real revolver rani, having declared several weapons in her affidavit. She owns a.315 bore rifle worth Rs.70,000, a 12 bore gun worth Rs.80,000, a .32 Webley Scott revolver worth Rs.2.50 lakh, a .22 rifle worth Rs.70,000 and a 28 bore gun worth Rs.55, 000.
  • Gaya - The battle of the Manjhis, all three major parties have fielded Manjhis. Manjhis(musahars), are known for their rat-catching and ploughing skills, and have become the dominant caste in Bihar after Lalu Prasad Yadav projected Bhagwati Devi as the most prominent musahar face. Manjhis have won here for all three previous terms, though they shift allegiances. Ramji Manjhi who won in 1999 on a BJP ticket is now the RJD candidate and is expected to  pose a serious threat to sitting MP Hari Manjhi of BJP.
  • Jhanjharpur - It's the battle of the party-hoppers here. Last elections, Mangani Lal Mandal won this seat for JD(U) against Devendra Prasad Yadav of RJD. This time both of them have switched parties and contesting again. Should be interesting to see if the party prevails or the candidate. An interesting opponent is AAP's Tiliya Devi, who is a nobel peace prize nominee for her work in creating awareness about Dalit rights
  • Arrah - Will be a close contest here between sitting MP Meena Singh of JD(U) and BJP's ex-Union home secy R.K.Singh. Despite not being a local, he is trying to establish a connect with the population by speaking at rallies in Bhojpuri. RJD's Bhagwan Singh Kushwaha will also be a tough opponent. The prevailing sentiment is that being a Rajput, he should be able to corner the community's votes and riding on the Modi factor, he could sail through by a small margin
  • Sasaram - "Bhaith Jaaiye" - Hope Meira Kumar wasn't using her trademark line at her rallies too. Lalu has campaigned well for her and should ensure her victory here
  • Darbhanga - Ex-cricketer Kirti Azad, who has won this seat twice including 2009 is facing strong RJD leader Ali Ashraf Fatmi who is also a 4-time MP from here. Also in the fray is JD(U)'s Sanjay Kumar Singh. Will be a close contest
  • Patna Sahib - All you need to know about this constituency is "Khamosh!!!!" as Shatrughan Sinha is the incumbent MP from BJP and expected to win easily
  • Begusarai - It will be a very close contest here between CPI, BJP and RJD as JD(U) holds the parliamentary seat and is backing CPI because they won the 2010 assembly elections. Bhola Singh of BJP won last time from Nawada and is a strong leader locally, having been an assembly member 9 times since 1967
  • Araria - Apparently in this Muslim dominated constituency there is a “wave” in favour of RJD's Taslimuddin which seems to be sweeping the BJP incumbent, Pradip Singh, rather than the Modi wave rescuing him.
  • Hajipur - The future of Ramvilas Paswan is at stake in this constituency where JD(U) has the sitting MP Ram Sunder Das. It has to be seen if Paswan can win on the backing of the Modi wave
  • Katihar - 3-time sitting MP Nikhil Kumar Chaudhary will slug it out against Tariq Anwar of NCP who was the MP four times in the 80s and 90s before BJP won this seat in 1999. Having Lallu Prasad's support, Tariq is expected to win this seat
  • Gopalganj - RJD-backed Jyoti Bharti faces a three-cornered contest here between Janak Ram of BJP and Anil Kumar of JD(U). Purnmasi Ram of Congress who won in 2009 has been fielded this time from Valmiki Nagar in an attempt to wrest that seat from JD(U)
  • Jahanabad - This is a prestige seat for Jagdish Sharma, a fodder scam convict who couldn't contest. Anil Sharma is the JD(U) candidate who will face a tough fight from RJD strongman Surendra Prasad Yadav and RLSP's Dr. Arun Kumar who is a fierce rival of Jagdish Sharma

Uttar Pradesh

Called a psephologist's nightmare, UP is always difficult to predict. So it is this year as well. Most opinion polls and now, the exit polls too put BJP as the leading party with at least 45 votes. As per my analysis, they can get a maximum of 45 votes because SP and BSP are still going strong in constituencies with their core support. But there are the two biggest battles of the country - Modi vs Kejriwal in Varanasi and Rahul Gandhi vs Smriti Irani vs Kumar Vishwas in Amethi. An upset in any of these have the potential to become international headlines. Only May 16 will tell.

Observations on the most interesting constituencies-
  • Varanasi - The biggest battle of the country this year. Narendra Modi's announcement from here was on expected lines and should comfortably win from here, though  Kejri and his workers have campaigned really hard. Pulling off a surprise here is near impossible, but you never know what the UP voter thinks.
  • Amethi - Rahul, having visited the booths of the constituency on polling day, created a flutter in the media that the Congress is nervous about winning this bastion of theirs. Could be the definitive seat of the year if Smriti Irani or Kumar Vishwas manage to wrest this stronghold from Congress. But most indications seem to tell "Not yet". The increased voter turnout(55% compared 42% in 2009) could be a sign of more anti-Congress votes, but they may not be enough to upstage Rahul
  • Muzaffarnagar - It is appalling that both BJP and BSP have fielded members who had a role in the riots - Sanjeev Ballian and Qadir Rana in this constituency. Rana has complained to EC about bogus voting which is in favor of BJP. It is not really clear how the voters would vote here, and another important factor is that the voter turnout was 70%. Reports indicate that BJP stands to gain the most if Muslim votes get split, but it will be an unfortunate result.
  • Pilibhit - Maneka Gandhi vacated her Aonla seat to constituency to escape the anger of the locals for lack of development there. She is expected to face a tough battle from SP's Budhsena Verma, but will clear the line thanks to the enormoust support for Modi in this town
  • Sultanpur - Varun Gandhi has also vacated his constituency in Pilighit where he won after an inflammatory speech he made. Now, he is contesting in Sultanpur and calling himself the Sultan of Sultanpur, and is expected widely to win comfortably
  • Faizabad - Home to Ayodhya, which is 5km away from Faizabad city, Modi's rally here became controversial for having used a picture of Ram. In the wake of some clashes that took place in 2012, and the perceived irresponsible attitude of the SP government, BJP looks to be the front-runner here
  • Farrukhabad - It will be an interesting contest here for foreign minister Salman Khurshid, who is facing a major anti-incumbency problem which could see even Muslim votes go away from him to either BSP or BJP. It will be a triangular contest between the three parties
  • Ghaziabad - It's the controversy king vs controversy queen in this constituency. BJP's V.K.Singh should be able to win against AAP's Shazia Ilmi
  • Mathura - Interesting contest between Hema Malini and RLD chief Ajit Singh's son Jayant. Though Hema Malini hasn't struck the right chord through her speeches, the Modi wave is expected to go in her favor in this constituency where even loyal Jats are seen to be deserting Jayant Choudhary
  • Mirzapur - Having lost by a small margin in 2009, BSP is expected to win this time from Mirzapur, a neighbouring constituency of Varanasi. BSP's Dhananjay Singh, who won from Jaunpur in 2009 faced many criminal charges and was dropped from the party this year and is contesting as an independent. This is only expected to help BSP as he will snatch some Kshatriya votes of the opponents
  • Fatehpur Sikri - RLD leader Amar Singh decided to contest from this constituency in an attempt to woo Jat votes and has also brought in many Bollywood celebs to campaign for him. But BSP's Seema Upadhyay seems to be the strongest contender
  • Rampur - Noor Bano is the widow of Rampur's Nawab and will pose a tough fight to BJP's Kumar Sarvesh Singh in this constituency which was won in 2009 by Mohammed Azharuddin
  • Kaiserganj - This constituency could return to BJP for the first time after 1991 due to its candidate Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh who was earlier with SP, which is the dominant force here
  • Firozabad - S.P.Singh Baghel, who defected from BSP to BJP has earned the wrath of Maya, who has issued a dictat to her supporters to do everything possible to defeat this traitor. Baghel, actually is one of the frontrunners in this Samajwadi Party bastion. The cross-voting could help SP retain this seat
  • Gonda - 5-time MP Beni Prasad Verma will face a tougher challenge this year as the Brahmin votes in this constituency will be split between him and Kirti Vardhan Singh of BJP. Muslim votes are also going to be divided among the other contestants, making this a rare Congress vs BJP battle in the state
  • Dhaurahra - BJP's Rekha is banking on a sympathy vote to see her through on a seat which came to her after the death of her husband Arun Kumar- a former block pramukh. In fact as per "The Indian Republic", she apparently doesn’t even speak much at rallies, she just folds her hands and cries. Her campaign managers, despite realising the immense value of the sympathy factor, wish their candidate would say a few words every now and then. “The Modi wave will work, but it would be good for the candidate to communicate with voters”, says one exasperated party worker. He also lets in that every time this has been conveyed to Rekha, she has responded with more tears.
  • Etawah - Mulayam Singh Yadav's home constituency, but there has been a lot of public resentment against SP, so the candidate here has literally been pleading for votes and Mulayam is asking the people to save his respect. Whether they will remains to be seen
Apart from these, some high profile candidates who should register easy wins are Sonia Gandhi from Rae Bareli, Uma Bharti from Jhansi, Mulayam Singh Yadav from both Mainpuri and Azamgarh, Murli Manohar Joshi from Kanpur, Ajit Singh from Baghpat(not so sure)

My predictions for the 80 constituencies. Upfront disclaimer: This is the state where I predict my accuracy to be the lowest. Anything can happen in UP

Telangana and Seemandhra

Possibly the most exciting state of the year, along with Uttar Pradesh. What makes Andhra Pradesh difficult to predict is the radically changed environment with the formation of Telangana and aftermath. Only thing easy to predict is that Congress will be the party winning the least seats. I have divided the analysis into Telangana and Seemandhra to present a better picture.

Telangana

After much hue and cry, the Telangana formation was expedited and became successful thanks to last minute vote bank politics by Congress. But little did they know KCR would play such a master move at the last moment by calling off their alliance after the passage of the T-Bill. But Congress and Sonia Gandhi still have some respect in some areas due to strong local leaders and will not face a complete rout for sure. But TRS stands to gain the most MP seats from this to-be-formed state.

Some key constituencies to watch out for -
  • Malkajgiri - One of the best election battles of the country this year. Sarve Satyanarayana, who won by a landslide majority in 2009 is facing a real tough challenge from TRS's Hanumanth Rao, Lok Satta Party's Jayaprakash Narayan(a bureaucrat-turned politician and also sitting MLA from Kukatpally) and Malla Reddy from the TDP-BJP alliance. Since the constituency hosts a large number of Seemandhra supporters, TRS and Congress will not have a clear edge like in other Telangana regions. Though Jayaprakash Narayan would be the ideal candidate to win from here, it seems it will be other factors like Telangana and Modi wave that would play a bigger role in this semi-urban constituency. I have to say this was the toughest constituency to predict for me, and I could very well be completely wrong when the results come out
  • Karimnagar - Strong candidates vie for this all-important constituency which has been a hotbed for Telangana agitations. Ponnam Prabhakar, sitting MP from Congress is banking on his efforts in the Telangana movement and having been a pepper spray victim in Parliament, while TRS's Vinod Kumar is highlighting the work done by him when he was a Congress MP from 2004 to 2009
  • Khammam - This constituency falls in Telangana but shares borders with ‘Seemandhra’, so is expected to be a tougher fight compared to other regions in Telangana due to the number of parties in the fray. Sitting MP Nama Nageswara Rao of TDP, founder of the Rs 3,000 crore infrastructure firm Madhucon Group, is engaged in a tight contest with YSRC's P Srinivasa Reddy, also a businessman, and CPI Andhra Pradesh Secretary K Narayana.  Since Nageswara won in 2009 by  a margin of 1 lakh votes, he is expected to win this time too, riding on the Modi wave, but YSRCP will give a tough fight
  • Mahbubnagar - The main contenders here are TRS's Jithender Reddy and Congress's Jaipal Reddy. TRS is confident of a win because this is KCR's constituency in 2009. Should most likely go in their favor, but BJP's Nagam is a political heavyweight in Mahbubnagar district, thanks to his six successes from the Nagarkurnool assembly so he could also pose a tough challenge
  • Nizamabad - It is an appalling statistic here that Kavitha, KCR's daughter is the only woman to be contesting all across Telangana. She is expected to pose a tough challenge to Madhu Goud Yaskhi, two-time sitting MP. May the force be with her.
  • Secunderabad - Congress's two time MP Anjan Yadav faces major anti-incumbency in this constituency while Bandaru Dattatreya, having been MP from Secunderabad for three terms between 1991 and 1999 is hoping to ride on the Modi wave and emerge victorious. AIMIM's Narla Mohan Rao is expected to gain Muslim votes
  • Bhongir - Sitting Congress MP Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy won by a huge margin in 2009 and has been able to manage good support due to Congress's role in creation of Telangana. It will be interesting to see if TRS's Narsaiah Boora, a surgeon-turned politician will snatch this seat

Seemandhra

This residual state of Andhra will be even more of a tough contest due to the Jagan factor, and the TDP-BJP alliance's "Modi for PM, Naidu for CM" themed campaign. YSRCP has done tremendous amounts of groundwork much before the election and allegedly hours before the election as well. But allegations fly from both sides, and though there are criminal cases against their head Jagan at least two major YSRCP candidates, their connect with the population, especially in rural areas is unmatched by other parties. The sympathy wave for YSR's death is still present, and along with their campaign pitch of continuing YSR's unfinished schemes, YSRCP is most likely to win most seats from Seemandhra. The TDP-BJP alliance will not fall behind majorly though. TDP have an advantage in many constituencies and are banking on the Modi wave and the sops-based approach to win over both urban and rural votes.

Some important constituencies to watch out for -

  • Guntur - TDP's Jay Galla, the vice-chairman of Amara Raja Group and former chairman of Confederation of Indian Industries, A.P is contesting the elections for the first time, and has been supported in his rallies by his brother-in-law Mahesh Babu. Though this is not enough to say he win the election with ease, it should go in his favor against former MP from YSRC, Vallabhaneni Balashourie
  • Narasaraopet - A mineral-rich constituency, it is a battle between two industrial biggies YSRC's Ayodhya Rami Reddy of Ramky group vs tobacco baron Rayapati Sambasiva Rao of Jayalakshmi Group, both claiming to make it a major industrial and educational hub. The region, known for tobacco, chilli and cotton production, suffers from inadequate agricultural infrastructure. Since there are quite a few projects started by YSR but incomplete, YSRC is using this also as a pitch. Should be a very close contest
  • Rajampet - Probably the most interesting contest in Seemandhra between BJP's Purandeswari(NTR's daughter), who is banking on NTR supporters' votebank, and  YSRCP's P.V.Midhun Reddy who is banking on Jagan's strength in the assembly constituencies in this region. Purandeswari was let down by being given this constituency and has accepted that it will be a challenge to win here
  • Kadapa - Since Jagan is contesting in the Assembly elections, his cousin Y.S.Avinash Reddy is contesting for YSRC. In this stronghold of the YSRs he should sail through easily, though not on such a huge margin as Jagan did
  • Vizianagaram - Called the battle royale between descendants of two royal dynasties, this is expected to be a close battle between Gajapathi Raju from Vizianagaram Royal family and Baby Nayana, the son of a former ruler of Bobbilli. Nayana has also been the Bobbili municipal chairperson in 2005, and has some good visibility in the region
  • Tirupati - This will be a 3-cornered contest between sitting MP Chinta Mohan of Congress, BJP's Karumanchi Jayaram who was a DSP before joining the election and YSRCP's Varaprasad Rao Velagapalli who will look to cash in on Jagan's popularity in some of the assembly constituencies that fall within Tirupati
  • Kakinada - Two time sitting MP Union Minister Pallam Raju who beat Chalamalasetty Sunil who was with Chiranjeevi's People Republic Party last elections is most likely to lose to him this time, but because Sunil is with YSRCP this time around. TDP's Thota Narasimham also should be able to gain more votes than Pallam Raju
  • Kurnool - Jayasurya Kotla is two time MP from this region, but is most likely to lose against YSRCP's Butta Renuka who is from the Padmashali community which is dominant in many parts of this Lok Sabha segment
  • Machilipatnam - Out of 13 lakh electors in this constituency, nearly 50 per cent are from BC community and 2 lakh from the Kapu community, according to estimates. So both YSRC and TDP are playing the caste card majorly here. YSRC's Kolusu Partha Sarathy was previously a Congress state minister and is expected to be the front runner here, but it will be a close contest against TDP
  • Chittoor - YSRC's Samanya Kiran, though having great credentials as a Ph.D in Telugu and being a lecturer in Hyderabad, joined the party as late as December 2013 and is considered by many as a new face who will not be able to win against the strength of TDP's sitting MP Naramalli Sivaprasad. But it could be a close contest.
  • Ongole - It will be a close contest between Jagan's uncle Y.V.Subba Reddy and TDP's Magunta Reddy who dealt a big blow to Congress by joining TDP in April
  • Bapatla - In this constituency, Congress's Panabaka Lakshmi will face a tough fight from TDP's Malyadri Sriram, who has been supported well by pawan Kalyan who has a huge fan base here
  • Anakapalle - It's mainly TDP vs YSRC in this rural constituency. TDP's Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao is a popular face for his Avanti group of institutions, while YSRC has fielded a young candidate Gudivada Amarnath, son of late ex-Congress Minister Gurunath Rao. Though a lot of villagers seem to be of the opinion that YSRC can be given a try, Avanti Srinivasa Rao has much more clout and is banking on the Modi wave to take him through
