Orissa

This has to be the most insipid state in terms of competition. Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal government seems to rule the roost and is expected to win a vast majority of the 21 seats. BJP itself has expressed hope in only 6 constituencies, while some opinion polls predict a maximum of 7 for them. Anti-incumbency factor against Naveen Patnaik exists in some places, but how much of a difference it will make needs to be seen. Modi's rallies have had an impact in urban areas, but their candidates are not much of a force to reckon with compared to BJD leaders.

Some interesting constituencies-
  • Bargarh - Subash Chouhan of BJP is an activist who's famous for his protests against conversion in the state. Sanjay Bhoi of Congress is sitting MP and he won by a huge margin in 2009. He belongs to the Kulta community who form the majority of the electorate in this constituency. AAP has also fielded Lingaraj of the same caste, but due to their lack of visibility, it is most likely that Sanjay Bhoi will retain the seat
  • Berhampur - BJP is confident of winning this seat, but Sidhanta Mohapatra, a popular film star in Orissa should manage to sail through. In 2009 he won by a margin of around 50000 votes
  • Bolangir - It's a battle between sitting MP Narayan Singh Deo and his sister-in-law Sangeeta Singh Deo in this constituency which BJP has pinned hopes on. She has won this constituency thrice from 1998 to 2004, so she does have a strong chance
  • Jagatsinghpur - Considered a BJD stronghold, the constituency was won by CPI's Bibhu Prasad Tarai in 2009. But Tarai has joined Congress this year and contesting on their ticket. Should be an interesting battle.
  • Kandhamal - It was due to the Kandhamal riots in 2008 that Naveen Patnaik played a masterstroke and cancelled their alliance with BJP at the last minute. BJP is still smarting from that and will look to win in this constituency dominated by Kandhs. But it will be difficult to upstage BJD
  • Keonjhar - Keonjhar was won by BJP in 1999 and 2004 but by BJD in 2009. After the Modi rally there has beena  lot of support for the BJP candidate Ananta Nayak. Will be a close fight
  • Nabarangpur - Having witnessed the state's highest voter turnout at 82%, this tribal-dominated constituency was won by Congress in the previous election, and could have been another easy BJD win, but the candidate they have fielded - Balabhadra Majhi is relatively new and may not have the same clout as Pradip Majhi. BJP's Parsuram Majhi is banking on a Modi wave, which may not really work in Nabarangpur
  • Sundargarh - BJD's Rajya Sabha MP Dilip Tirky who was Indian Hockey Team captain is contesting against BJP's state vice-president Jual Oram and Congress's Hemanand Biswal for this seat. BJP has held this constituency thrice between 1998 and 2004 and lost it by a small margin to Congress in 2009. It should be a relatively easy win for Jual Oram
